A Powerful Home Remedy For A Dry Cough
The last week I had a terrible dry cough that wouldn’t go away. It kept me awake at night and I’d hack until my lungs hurt.
What was most frustrating is that their really wasn’t anything wrong with me, I was just coughing uncontrollably. I probably had a mild cold, but nothing too serious.
One night I was still coughing after drinking about a gallon of hot tea when I finally got fed up and decided to make my own herbal remedy….and it worked!
Here’s what I did.
Why You Cough
Of course, to treat the symptoms you have to understand the causes.
When you have a dry cough usually at least a few of the following things are happening in your body:
1). Your pharnyx and other lung tissue is inflamed.
2). Your throat is usually constricted and tightened up.
3). Your body’s mucus and other protective fluids are out of balance and often stripped away.
4). You might have a bacterial/viral infection residing somewhere in your throat.
So with that in mind we need to concoct our ingredients to treat each malady.
The Superfood Cough Syrup
Starting with this recipe offered by Bonnie McMillen, here’s a homemade cough syrup that should be able to be used in a similar manner as Tylenol, Dimetap, or a similar medication.
Ingredients
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon ground turmeric
3 tablespoons agave nectar
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons water
Take in teaspoonfuls.
I used this to treat my coughs and it works remarkably well.
Why It Works
Let’s take a look at the ingredients and what they do in your body:
Ginger, cayenne, and turmeric: powerful anti-inflammatories.Â
Some of the phyto-chemicals in these three spices are well known to be very efficacious in reducing inflammation of all sorts. Gingerol, circuminoids, and caspaicin are powerful mediators of the endocrine system that mediate the expression of oxygen radical enabling enzymes and reduce the transmission of pain nerves throughout the body.
Vinegar is a natural antibiotic
Vinegar is acetic acid, which is a potent antibacterial agent. It’s been used to kill germs of all kinds for centuries.
Honey Coats Your Throat
When you have a dry cough your mucus membranes are typically exposed and your throat is lacking its normal protectants which catch germs and keep it moist.
The Water Makes It Bearable
This elixir has a very strong taste, and the water dilutes everything just enough to make it bearable to drink on its own.
I would suggest taking this in conjunction with lots of hot tea with honey and lemon.
So the next time you’re looking for a natural remedy for your cough, you know what to do!
